Hey photographers, if you're looking for detailed hands-on reviews, explanations and demonstrations of cameras, this may be the place.
Here you will find honest and detailed camera reviews, along with some how-to videos and the occasional travel review. I strive to provide what one viewer called "pleasant impartiality".
In my reviews I examine and demonstrate all of a camera's controls, features and menus so you can see what it's really like to use it. I show you what other reviewers only talk about, along with lots of sample photos and videos. I don't sit at my desk - I go out and take photos.
One more thing - as long as your comments are relevant and civil, I will read and reply - I'm always happy to interact with my viewers.
In previous careers I produced and directed TV, wrote reviews for daily newspapers in Toronto and developed interactive television applications and services.

Tamron 17-70 f2.8 review (for x-mount)
Although I'll probably take photos fo4 the most part, there are times when I do need to record videos to the best quality possible. Soo XT3 it is, though I certainly would've liked to set more of my budget for more than 1 lens, but meh I could buy those later.
Thanks for adding your thoughts.
Who’s watching this in 2024?
I've been wondering the same thing!
Thank you for yet another unbiased, informative review Maarten. Your style is unique on UA-cam and always my "go to" when I'm looking for an accurate review. Your subtle humour makes your reviews so watchable.
You are very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks Maarten. Just bought a used Fujifilm X-A5. This video will help me learn how to use it.
Always nice to know that my videos are helpful, thanks!!
thanks for putting time making this review but considering this is an entry level cameras it offers a lot....and if you miss all other features on this camera body it means you should look for a em-5 or em-1
Sound advice, thanks for your kind words.
Excellent informative review, thanks !
Glad to hear that it's appreciated, thanks!
Great review. Cear and informative. No ego, no waffle - as is all too often the case with UA-camrs. Subscribed.
That's great, always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my style.
Great review!
Thanks! Always a pleasure to read kind words

Mulțumesc pentru cuvintele tale frumoase, sunt apreciate.
fantastic review! just asking if the flash you used was included in your purchase? and if not-i'm wondering where i can buy a flash attachment as i recently picked this camera up from a relative. thanks!
The flash was included.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks for the reply :) by any chance do you know where i could buy a flash attachment that works for this model?
Excellent episode. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and inspiring us. Some people are lucky to have trusty, highly disciplined companyans, dogs that demand daily sharing of energy and joy of going out of the house. But what about us, cat lovers. Cats want us to stay home on the couch until time for treats and protein rich feast. Casual creative photography to the rescue! Taking spontaneous pictures is fun and satisfying. Or just taking beloved toy for a walk wouldn't hurt. And let cats keep your couch warm.
Cute! Thanks for commenting.
But... if I keep everything in focus, then I have to think about framing and using creative capturing methods for creative pictures instead of just point>shoot, and bluring everything out.... oh wait, I think I understand now.
Always nice when viewers appreciate my sense of humour.
Why did Sony stop selling this model?
Beause sales were not generating enough revenue to continue production.
WHY DOES THE SCREEN GOES TO BLACK ON THE EXTERNAL MONITOR WHEN I PRESS RECORD ON MY LUMIX FZ300? HELP!!! THANKS
Why do you type in all caps? This is not the only camera that can't do both (most Sony models also black when an external monitor is connected.
Can we shoot vertically?
Not without an additional accessory.
Dziękujemy.
Doceniam Twoje miłe słowa i hojny wkład w moją pracę!
Great And Educating Video For We Nikon Cinematographers But why is it that people talks down Nikon Cameras when it comes to videography?
That was before Nikon introduced mirrorless models. No DSLR is as capable for video as a mirrorless camera.
Many thanks!
You're welcome, and thanks for the contribution to my channel.
You are amazing! This is a great review! Cheers mate! You deserve more subs 🎉
Thanks. In my mind, I have exactly the right number of subscribers.
Excellent video, I love the tone and the calmness of the explanations. What wall-adapter would I need to power the Fuji enough so the battery doesn´t slowly drain? There are PD rated Powerbanks but I don´t know if they deliver enough juice to also not drain the battery of the Fuji, as far as I understood they need to deliver 3amps?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. Any adapter or external power battery that supports PD would be fine, capacity will determine how long it will last. The internal battery will drain slowly regardless of the source.
@@MaartenHeilbron Incredible that the battery will still drain at some point and that it is not possible to shoot for as long as wished pluged into a wall adapter. Thank you for your response.
Thank you so much Maarten For stills, which one would you recommend between Canon R50 and this Nikon z30 ? Thanks again :)
They are both fine cameras that are roughly equivalent. You might prefer one if you already have compatible lenses. If there's no specific feature or capability that makes your choice simpler, I'd suggest you make your decision based on your wallet, the feel of the camera and controls in your hand and your brand/design preference.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks !!
Excellent video, great content. Very informative, keep up the good work 👍
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Planning to get the XT2 very soon, maybe I could squeeze out just a little bit more from my lens budgey for an XT30 or XT3, but that isn't quite necessary, still considering it though.
Lots of options - choices are difficult!
Right! But Sony’s still the best!
Well, this video is 6 years old, and a lot has changed. However, on a purely menu basis, I feel that Panasonic does it best.
@@MaartenHeilbronright! Sony is still a bit messy 🤪
Great review ! Do you recommend this camera for content creation ? I need it for video recording mainly and for photos secondly
This would not be my first choice. Video bitrate is very low and the AVCHD codec is now quite dated.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for replaying ! can you suggest me some low budget cameras ? for video recording and photos secondly and budget around 250$ 300$ ( a second hand camera )
Amazing review and explanations! Delightful.
It was a pleasure to read your kind comments, thanks for taking the time.
Such a great informative video. Are you available for a short remote consultation? My daughter is performing in a big play on stage this weekend and I always have issues with washed out faces because of the bright stage lights. I would sure appreciate a consult if possible. Thx!!
Sorry to be slow getting to this - youtube is not really useful to me any longer. I would use manual settings: 1/60 shutter speed with a fairly wide aperture (not too wide, as that will make focus difficult, so say F5.6 - but not sure what lens you're using). Then set the ISO manually to expose faces properly. Hope this helps.
ny pointers as to why the A9II EVF would show so many artifacts ( purple blue moire ) and has so little resolution especially while half pressing the shutter during focusing?
I have no experience with the A9 II, sorry.
Succinct and clear. No whining marcistic irrelevant BS intro and/or content.
A pleasure to read your kind words - you've completely understood my intention when producing videos!
Very nice video as usual. Is there any particular reason that you set d range priority to strong rather than auto? I have been using the auto setting on my XT3 and have generally been very satisfied. Thanks
Good question! I use strong and record raw images. With the strong setting you can use the playback raw conversion to reset it to any other level. That’s true of a few other settings also. With the highest setting you can undo, but with lower settings you can’t increase.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks. It is my understanding that the strong setting requires twice the ISO, which in turn, increases the noise a bit.
Valid thought. It's not twice the ISO, but in well-lit situations might require a higher IOS than needed.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for responding. Have a nice day.
This is one of the clearest explanations I've seen on UA-cam. I'm brand new to mirrorless and my Z7 ii and this video was super helpful. Thank you!
It's always a pleasure to read notes like yours - knowing that I've been able to help others with their photography journey.
What would be good video settings for sports??
The ones I provided in the video. Did you try them? Are the results not what you expected?
Full touch and manual control dials. Wow. The menu is so nice. Such a succinct video. (I've always used Olympus, but they don't seem to keep up, even with a new company taking over. At a visceral level, the Panasonics have always pulled my attention away, despite the nostalgia for the Olympus design.)
Thanks for adding your thoughts to the comments.
Does the a7r3 support/need the v90 Sandisk SD card? Mine just arrived heard they were faster lol but I’m not seeing a difference from my v30 cards.
The higher video data rates are only supported on faster cards. However, you're correct, the V30 is sufficient for most purposes. If shooting stills in burst mode, your buffer will clear faster.
Thank you Maarten for producing such an informative video on the functions of the LUMIX GX85/ 80 camera. I purchased my GX85 about six months ago spending multiple hours searching & watching other people’s videos on how the functions of the camera worked. However, I was able to learn more about the GX85 in your 17 minute video than I did watching all of those hours of other people’s videos. It has been said that to become a better photographer, you need to understand the operations of your camera, so I want to thank you for helping me become a better photographer.
It's always a pleasure to learn that I've provided helpful information - thanks for taking the time to coment.
Hi , thank you so much for the explanation . I’m having trouble adjusting the focus frame size (zooming in and out )on my Fuji camera with the rear command dial . Also , when I press the joystick and move the focus area selection , I can’t see the focus points . I tried to fix the relevant settings by watching your some videos but I couldn’t find it . I couldn’t fix the feature you demonstrated in the 2.03 minute and actually all problem is that . I would greatly appreciate it if you could help . Thank you .
Which camera are you using? In order to select the focus area, first set the AF Mode to "All", then you can select any of the area selections using the rear dial. The focus points don't display in Continuous Focus modes, and if you're in Wide area, you won't see squares either. Hope this helps.
Very helpful. thank you.
Always a pleasure to read kind words from a viewer, thanks!!
Anyone able to provide a diameter measurement of the base part of the lens that extends when camera is on?
I think the manual (I no longer have the camera) provides that information.
I recently wanted to buy a new RX100 after being very happy for many years with the M1. Since the M7 is out some years now, I hoped to wait for a successor to the M7 but it seems there won't be a M8/VIII... is the 4 year old camera still worth 1200? How is its performance at night compared to modern smartphones? And: I was surprisingly happy with the results of star-photography with the RX100 M1, but I read that the newer models are worse because of a different lens settings - can that be true?
On other new cameras Sony has mostly improved focus, otherwise, I think it remains a good size for its size. It's not worse, it's just different. I think that the results for star photography would be improved - but have you read otherwise?
Very informative. I've watched a LOT of videos about this camera and this is the first one I've seen that really provided a look at the settings/menus in such detail. I've been on the fence but I think you just helped me decide. I consider myself an above average hobbyist in skill level. I have a DSLR that I love and have learned a lot with but I find myself limited the size, weight, and sheer amount of gear to lug around (even when I limit myself to maybe my two favorite lenses). Recently went to House of Mouse with family for a day and thought I'd pick up a simple point and shoot that would be a step above my cell phone. By the way, while on that trip I took one of my favorite pictures ever of my cousin and her toddler so I do think great pictures can be taken with a cell phone, I can only imagine what that same picture could have been like with a better camera/lens. Imagine my surprise when I realized the point and shoot market has changed considerably (as in nearly non-existant). My naive self thought I'd be able to run into a Best Buy the day before our visit and grab something decent off the shelf. I always thought there would be a market for a good point and shoot with great manual features. Thus, my trip down the rabbit hole over the past few months while trying to find out if there are any great compact cameras out there. I'm surprised Sony has apparently discontinued this line and can't believe I'm about to shell out this type of money for a design that is five years old but I kept hearing great things and now you've answered quite a few of the questions that I still had. Thanks so much for the great content!
Always nice to know that viewers appreciate my detailed and hands-on approach to camera reviews. Thanks for taking the time to comment. While the camera is not a "new" model, most of its features are current - with the posisbnle exception of focus, as that's the area where Sony has improved on higher end/larger models.
Who organized your trip? Thanks.

After riding a terrible road bike seat on my commuter recently for a few hours and having noticeable pain in my butt and such, this looks like the real solution. Just remove the nose of the saddle and have a comfy seat cushion

Excellent video, thanks for helping a video novice!

God bless You man! This is so helpful!
Glad it helped! I appreciate your kind words.
I haven’t used the camera since 2019. I brought it out today to use it again, re downloaded SnapBridge and followed instructions. Once I get to the “pairing” stage, my camera name doesn’t pop up anymore . Is it because it’s been years and the app is no longer compatible with the D3400?
I honestly have no idea. Does Google have a solution?
How to see the correct light on the sony 6300 screen?
Can you give me a little more detail on what you mean by "correct light"? In video mode, the screen shows exactly what will be recorded.
@@MaartenHeilbron for example, I shoot a video at ISO 150, everything looks fine on the screen, but when I send it to the computer, the light is too bright.
Please provide more details on how you send it to the computer, and which application you're using to view the file on the computer. Have you looked at the histogram for the recording?
Great review, thank you. Didn’t know these extra benefits of my camera, lean and simple explanation
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kind words.

Always nice to read that my videos are appreciated, thanks!!
sorry but why is he hiding Fujifilm logo thats on the front of the camera? i really like that! was he using a black tape?
Yes, I was using black tape, becuase at the point that I was recording this video, neither camera or lens had been announced, so I was doing my best to be discreet.
